“From little acorns grow mighty oaks…”

Over 45 years ago, in Karachi, a group of talented ladies got together to lay the foundations of this society. A simple coffee morning was transformed to a form of expressive art. Gradually, as the word spread, more friends showed interest. The little designs created were seen and admired by art lovers. Members increased, new ideas were brought in and the society started taking shape. Exhibitions were put up, competitions held which were much appreciated and became an event to look forward to. So, in 1970, the Karachi Floral Art Society was formally formed. In 1972, Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan was made Patron of the society.

In 1973, the first Flower Show open for public viewing was held at the PACC, inaugurated by Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, then Governor of Sindh and President of APWA.

In 1976 a new dimension was added in the form of arranging flowers for a cause. It was decided to donate the proceeds of the show to a deserving charity. Since then we have helped the Leprosy Centre, the Kidney Centre, Fatimid Foundation, Behbud, ABSA, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Citizens’ Foundation and many many others.

In 1977 the first constitution was made.

Members of the Karachi Floral Art Society participated in international shows, won prizes and brought fame and recognition to Pakistan.

In 1987 the society became a member of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies of Great Britain), and in 1990 Pakistan was admitted to WAFA, the World Association of Flower Arrangers, bringing the number of member countries to 27. Every three years, WAFA shows are hosted by a member country in which members from all over the world put up exhibits for competition. Our members have won many prizes in Britain, Paris, Canada, New Zealand, Africa and Japan.

Pakistan will be hosting the 9th WAFA show in March 2008 in Lahore.

In 1997, a new club was opened in Lahore and, in 1998, in Islamabad, to spread and share the art of flower arranging. To meet the new requirements, the Karachi Floral Art Society was rechristened as the Floral Art Society of Pakistan.

In 2005, another club was launched in Faisalabad and 2006 saw the birth of the Sialkot and Hyderabad clubs respectively.

The Floral Art Society of Pakistan is a non-profit NGO. Its aims and objectives are:

To promote national and international goodwill and understanding through the promotion of floral art.

To hold exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and seminars to encourage the love and use of flowers creatively.

Each city chapter is managed by its President and Managing Committee.

The National Committee coordinates between all the chapters in the country.
